When I was in high school, I had high hopes of going to a great university and going on to be whatever it was that I decided I wanted to be. After all, I had been told all of my life that I would be able to achieve whatever dreams and goals that I set my mind to. But when it actually came the time for me to start applying for schools, even though I got in to every school I applied for, I began to worry about whether or not I would be able to afford to go to any of them. After all, my parents never really had a lot of money and so I had no real college fund to rely on. So while all of my friends were getting excited to graduate high school and go away to college because their parents were paying their way through everything, I was stuck wondering if I would even be able to afford it. I felt like I had to figure something out because, after all, I had spent years working my butt of in high school, getting good grades, taking advanced placement classes, and doing extracurricular activities for the sole purpose of being able to get into a good school. There was no way that I was going to let my dreams be crushed now.
So when it came time to actually figure my finances out for school, I figured that if I wanted to go to the school that I preferred, I was going to need to somehow come up with at least $15,000 each year. To me, that number seemed like way too much money for me to ever dream of having. My parents said they would contribute what they could, but I knew that would not be much. I decide that my only real option was going to be to find some student loan people and see if they could help me.
Since I was new to the whole process of getting student loans, I was not really sure where to start. A friend of mine who was in college and had taken out loans told me to fill out a FAFSA, whcih is a federal form that determines what kind of aid from the government you can be eligible for. I was glad that I filled this out, because if I hadn’t, I later found out that would have prevented me from being able to take out any government loans (and those tend to be the ones with the lowest interest rates, too). In fact, one of my loans that I am now taking out for school is completely interest free. So if you are a student wondering how you are ever going to pay for college, you should fill out that FAFSA form as soon as you can and fill it out on time every year. This will allow you not only to be eligible for grants, but to be eligible for student loans with reasonable interest rates as well.
